Rangeland wildlife

North Dakota's Endangered and Threatened Species Quick guide designed to identitify and provide information about the federally listed threatened and endangered species found in North Dakota. From the Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center.

Prehistorical Conditions of Rangelands in the Northern Great Plains A description of prehistoric northern grassland environmental forces and plant/animal ecosystem processes including climate, vegetation, herbivores, and humans. From the NDSU Dickinson Research Extension Center.

Maps of Distribution and Abundance of Selected Species of Birds on Uncultivated Native Upland Grasslands and Shrubsteppe in the Northern Great Plains A report providing ecologists and ornithologists with recent information on areas of abundance of some of the more important members of the avifauna which use grasslands. From the Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center Online.

Status and Trends of the Nation's Biological Resources--Grasslands Highlights the main bodies of North American grasslands: the tall-grass prairie, the mixed-grass prairie, and the short-grass prairie. Featured are the animals and plants dependent on native grassland, and the relationship between remaining native grassland and biological resources. From the Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center Online

Waterfowl Communities in the Northern Plains (1996) Eleven waterfowl species are studied especially addressing some environmental influences on waterfowl communities in mixed-grass prairie pothole habitat. Originally published as a chapter of the book entitled Long Term Studies of Vertebrate Communities. From the Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center Online.

Effects of Fire in the Northern Great Plains (1989) Provides information concerning fire effects on the grassland biome of the Northern Great Plains, with special emphasis on the use of fire for wildlife management. Produced by the Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center.

Effects of Fire on Bird Populations in Mixed-grass Prairie (1997) Describes the effects of prescribed fire on common terrestrial birds at a mixed-grass prairie site in east-central North Dakota. Birds were censused annually during 1972-95 on seven plots subjected to various regimes of prescribed fire. From Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center Online

Wildlife Habitat Management on the Northern Prairie LandscapeThis paper describes some useful tools for managing information at all phases of managing the survival, reproduction, and distribution of wildlife, as well as building public support and partnerships for meeting those objectives. From Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center Online.

Cattle Grazing and Sharp-Tailed Grouse Nesting Success. (1995) Traditional livestock grazing systems reduce residual vegetation required for grouse nesting. However, this study finds that rotation grazing systems maintain similar density of successful sharp-tailed grouse nests when compared to nongrazed areas.

Effects of Specialized Grazing Systems on Waterfowl Production in Southcentral North Dakota. (1990) A study (1) to determine the effects of six types of grazing systems on upland vegetation characteristics, duck nest densities, nest site selection and nesting success, (2) to compare livestock production on these same grazing treatments and (3) to determine if any of the grazing systems benefited both upland nesting ducks and livestock production more than the others. From the NDSU Animal and Range Sciences Department

The Influence of Grazing Systems and Grazing Intensity on Nongame Birds in North Dakota Grasslands A two year study to determine the effects of four levels of grazing intensity on nongame birds. Results published in two reports: 2001 and 2002. Annual reports produced by the NDSU Central Grasslands Research Extension Center. Final publication issued as a Master's Thesis of Eric D. Salo from South Dakota State University.
